During the weekend of April 17th and 18th the surfing community
of North Florida will be hosting the 3rd annual Matt “Rasta” Gray memorial surf contest, in loving
memory of Matt Gray who passed away three years ago. Matt was a very energetic part of the local surfing community, not a
day with waves would go by without Matt basking in the oceans astonishing gift. He was such an intriguing part of so many
lives. Countless numbers of local surfers want Matt’s memory and good vibe to last with this memorial surf contest.
The surfing competition showcases local talent ages six to sixty. The contest offers male and female divisions with wide ranges
of age groups. This year we are happy to announce a Pro/Am division, which offers cash prizes to the finalist thanks to our
outstanding sponsors. Last year the contest was a success after diminishing surf reports prior to the scheduled date. Being
the only surfing contest to be run in Atlantic Beach the Matt “Rasta” Gray memorial offers a real family and local
living vibe. We ask that you come down and share good stories of Matt and enjoy the atmosphere of the contest. Everyone is
invited to surf in the contest also. Last year we had many beginners sign up for the contest and some first time surfers entered
the Super Grom division. The Super Grom division is free for any child under the age of ten. The competitors in the super groms division will be able to have the help of a parent
or an older adult to assist them in catching waves. Every competitor will receive a medal and a small give away package. The
division will not be judged and should be the most exciting heat of the day.
This year’s event will be held between the blocks of 18th and 19th street in Atlantic beach
Florida on the weekend of April 24th and 25th. Entry forms will be available at Sunrise surf shop, and
other shops and restaurants around the beach. All entry forms can be turned in electronically at www.floridasurfing.org, or entries
may be dropped off at sunrise surf shop ONLY before April 20th 2010. All proceeds will go towards the Matt gray
memorial fund.
