The artist for this year’s Super Grom Surf Festival I June 8. HECTOR MORALES
Born in Puerto Rico in 1969, I grew up next to the beach my entire life. An avid surfer, moved to Orlando Florida in 1986 and continued my bodyboarding competition career for 14 years. Graduated from UCF in Engineering Design. Naturally talented with a pencil, I have sketched my whole life but never took it too seriously until about 6 years ago when my now wife took me to a Britto Gallery in Miami. I opened my big mouth and told her that even I could paint that way so, naturally my wife told me to shut up and put up. That’s when things took a turn for the better and my passion for art got sparked. Last year I meet Drew Brophy looking for a medium to paint a surfboard and got introduced to POSCA pens and to paint on surfboards, skateboards, helmets, etc. If it has a solid surface, I can paint on it. My art is lots of fun and very bright. Surfing and the ocean are my greatest inspirations for my art. I inspire to lift people’s spirits with my art. I will take someone’s intangible idea and turn it into a tangible piece of art that they will enjoy for years to come. At the moment I am working with Bobby Z, the creator of BZ bodyboards and one of my old sponsors during my surfing career to create a line of custom designed bodyboards, surfboards, t-shirts, and hats.

The contest was started as a Pro/Am in 1984 by Bill Hixon & Sandy Forsyth, owners of the two biggest surf shops in town. Both adept businessman, they knew a big Pro/Am would ignite a new stoke on the local surf scene, as well as help raise the image of surfing as a viable sport. Bringing top pros from around the world could only raise the performance of local surfers. The first few years were very successful but the pro purses were a financial burden, resulting in dropping the pro divisions. Every year the contest has grown in size and popularity. The pro event was reintroduced about seven years ago as a way to give our local amateurs a chance to mingle with and compete against a higher level competitor. This really helps heighten the energy level on the beach and raises the bar in the water as well.
For years, monthly meetings with hot topics and guest speakers were the norm, but busy work schedules and time restraints have put those on hold. More information at: http://wavemasters.org/blog/
