The contest was started as a Pro/Am in 1984 by Bill Hixon & Sandy Forsyth, owners of the two biggest surf shops in town. Both adept businessman, they knew a big Pro/Am would ignite a new stoke on the local surf scene, as well as help raise the image of surfing as a viable sport. Bringing top pros from around the world could only raise the performance of local surfers. The first few years were very successful but the pro purses were a financial burden, resulting in dropping the pro divisions. Every year the contest has grown in size and popularity. The pro event was reintroduced about seven years ago as a way to give our local amateurs a chance to mingle with and compete against a higher level competitor. This really helps heighten the energy level on the beach and raises the bar in the water as well.
For years, monthly meetings with hot topics and guest speakers were the norm, but busy work schedules and time restraints have put those on hold. More information at: http://wavemasters.org/blog/

SURFING GETS PERSONAL AT RED BULL CALL EM OUT
16 Shredders Set to Catch Waves and Call the Shots at George’s Music Springing the Blues Festival
WHAT: Red Bull Call Em Out is a unique surf event in which a dynamic pool of 16 established surfing professionals are selected to battle it out in a one on one format. Competitors have the ability to either “call out” or be “called out” by their rival competitors in a double elimination competition like the old west gunfights. The field will be divided in half at random to see who has the chance to call their competition out, and who will be called out to take to the water for each round of one on one battles.
This year’s Red Bull Call Em Out is run in conjunction with the 10th annual Surfing The Blues and the world famous George’s Music Springing the Blues Festival in Jacksonville Beach, Florida.
WHO: 16 North Florida dynamic surfers will take to the water to battle the competition head to head until there is only one winner crowned. The diverse grouping will include the working class heroes, weekend warriors, childhood prodigies and the likes of international surf stars such as Cody Thompson, Asher Nolan and Gabe Kling.
The history with this range of surfers is personal and run deeps with local childhood rivalries still cemented in the North Florida surf scene.
Dane “Jah” Jeffereys will also be on-site bringing some local flair through his emcee talents as the day’s curator for the event between heats. This event is sanctioned by the Florida Surfing Association.

What started over 20 years ago by a few crazy surfers here in Jax Beach has grown to seeas many as 500 participants show up for this annual celebration. It may not have the icy conditionsof The Polar Plunges way up North, but it’s still a great way to start the New Year. The WaveMasters started over 30 years ago when Sandy Forsyth of Aqua East and Bill Hixonof Hixon’s Surf Shop, started a Pro/Am Contest to raise money for local charities, whileraising the reputation of the sport of surfing. Beaches Watch is a community organization which closely monitors the activities and plans of the beachesgovernments and keeps the citizens abreast of all local issues and agendas. The Jacksonville Beach Lifesaving Corps just celebrated their 100th Anniversary. They help keep our beachesa safe environment and a top travel destination for vacationers around the world.
